TONAL VARIATION OF COLORS:

Tonal variation refers to the lightness or darkness of a color created by its various tints and shades. The color assigned to me was Blue. I think that there are an infinite number of tonal variations of a color. While making the swatches, I realized that even a dot of white in blue can change its shade.

There were a lot of challenges as the colors that are used in packaging (CMYK) are very different from the ones which we use on paper (Poster colors). The light and shadow also created confusions in recognizing the right color of that product. Most of the time, I got the color right but sometimes I had to choose the swatch which seemed the closest to the original color.

PROCESS OF INQUIRY:

I think that each different approach of inquiry had different learning outcomes. The inquiry gathered from observation of color swatches enabled me to distinct between different shades of blue clearly and understand my own associations with those shades.

The information collected from the survey was the most exciting as it covered various points of view and thus helped me understand how each person perceive that color.

  • When asked about how they perceive a navy blue shade of color, most of them associated it with calmness and wisdom due to its symbolism of the national flag. There was a very less amount of people (1 person) who associated it with safety.

  • It is true that the symbolism of color changes with different cultures across the world. Since the majority of people in India are Hindus, 28 out of 35 people associated it with the Hindu mythological deities. While for some it symbolized pride and nationality, for the others it was a color of good fortune according to their culture (mostly Christians)

STRUGGLES DURING THE FINAL RESPONSIVE WRITING:

Since this was the first time we were doing a Responsive writing, there were some struggles while compiling the data. There were times when I didn't know what should I write as I had already written all the points in my reflection note.

But I was able to overcome it with the help of the format of the responsive writing provided to us. The format was quite self-explanatory and even if I faced some problem, I always had my peers and tutors helping me out.

IILUSTRATED GLOSSARY:

1. Complementary Colors: Colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel. For example, blue and orange.

2. Triadic Colors: Colors that are equidistant on the color wheel forming an equilateral triangle. For example, red, blue and yellow.

3. Swatch: A rectangular or square stroke of color.

4. Shade: When the intensity of black increases in the color.

5. Tints: When white is added to a color to create a lighter hue.

6. Tone: When grey is added to the hue.

THOUGHTS:

I believe that this new way of learning in which we are asked to do the work and question everything rather than learn it though books is quite an approach to prepare us for the design world. I believe that the concept of having studios instead of classrooms gives us an experience of how a designer works.

This might seem a little stressing at first but it is the building block of our career and in the long run this is what is gonna make us a great designer.

KEY LEARNINGS:

Through this project, I realized how by just changing the saturation or shade of the color, one can decipher different meanings out of it. It has helped me understand the various symbolisms attached to a single color and equipped me with the resources to broaden my horizon of research on it.
