VISUAL & MATERIAL CULTURE:

Visual culture according to me is the use of visuals to express aspects of a culture. It includes the tangible forms of expression and communicates about the lifestyle, culture, or anything else through visual means. Material culture is basically the study of physical objects such as tools, weapons, building etc. which informs us about the human-made forms of expressions.

To study the material culture is to study the relationship between man and his things (objects) which includes creation, usage, consumption, trade. Visual culture gets formed everyday (building, advertising, photographs, etc.) which informs about the cultural aspect and can be interpreted by the viewer.

For this task we decided to work in our group (GROUP 2) only. We had to observe the visual & material culture depicted in a film / documentary drama / drama series that is set in the time period assigned to us (situated in any geographical location).

Our time period 1800 AD-1890 AD India was famous for its revolt of 1857 and thus we decided to watch 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi', a 2019 Bollywood period drama film about the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai and her role in the freedom struggle of 1857.
