DAY 1: COMBINE

This day we had to combine two or more material to create out of the box outcomes. The motto was to manipulate the properties of a material leading to change in their visual and structural identities in order to form new ones.

EXPLORATIONS:

1. Cement + Leaves: I love making structures by dipping various things in cement, so this time I decided to use the papaya leaves from my garden in order to make a sphere out of them. It was a failure though as the cement did not stick to the leaves and came off after drying.

2. PVC pipe + Wire + Jute rope:

3. Candle + Binder spring: I put the candle in hot water so that it becomes flexible. Due to this it became easier for me to pass the spring from its inside without breaking the candle.

4. Rubber foam + Aluminium sheet: I made springs by cutting thin strips of aluminium sheet and then tied them with rubber foam.

5. Plastic mesh + Nylon rope: Tried weaving them together by making a pattern.

6. Aluminium sheet + Nylon rope:

7. Nails + Binder spring + thermocol: I only used thermocol as a base for the nails. Also it feels like confusion.

8. Steel mesh + Jute rope + Nylon fibers:

9. Water pipe + Jute rope:

10. Then I burned the above exploration. I found out that the pipe melted and got squeezed but the jute rope turned into ash.

11. OHP + Rubber foam + Sunboard: I burned all three together and realised that the foam and OHP sheet got stuck with each other.

12. I burned my glue stick and dropped it on thermocol and rubber foam.

13. Sunnoard + Wire: I first heated one end of the wire by keeping it over a flame, so it became easy to sew it through sunboard.

14. Aluminium sheet + Corrugated sheet:

15. Thermocol + Bamboo Skewers:

16. Corrugated sheet + Nails + Wire: I used the wire to arrange corrugated sheet in circular manner.

17. Steel + Nylon rope: I found this steel door hinge in the store room and I decided to use it to create something.

18. Steel + Coir + Rope: This was again something that I found in the store room and I decided to make a pattern by using ropes.

19. Rubber foam + Wire: Weaving wire on rubber foam

20. Water pipe + All pin:

REFLECTION:

It was very interesting to combine the materials as I wanted to do this from the very first day. It was easier when I combined the obvious materials such as rope and mesh but that was not the case for other materials such as sunboard and nails.

I learnt how one material can be used to manipulate the properties of the other.

DAY 2: FEELING

'To find yourself, think for yourself' is a very apt quote by Socrates which asks us to make us our priority and this was the day to portray our emotions and feelings by making. We had to think of certain emotions and try to portray them using the materials.

In my case it was quite the opposite as I first created something and then assigned feeling to them.

THOUGHTS:

1. Death: I'm not sure if death is an emotion but I made this keeping in mind a line that I read in class 12th English chapter that "In Death there is peace" and this why I decided to paint the strips of paper blue to portray that emotion.

2. Honour: This depicts the emotion of victory. The nails portray war somehow and it also resembles like a medal to me.

3. Freedom: The metal squares going upwards gives a sense of freedom, as if a bird is flying out of its cage.

4. Surprise: the curly lines and the way they are coming up like a fire cracker gives a feeling of excitement mixed with surprise.

5. Sorrow: This seems like something that has lost hope and instead of looking up it has bend downwards. I even used glue stick to show how it is entangled in this darkness.

6. Cherish: Ice-cream sticks always remind me of my carefree childhood days and those memories always bring a smile on my face which I will always cherish.

7. Mysterious: It is because this sometimes looks like a flower, sometimes looks like thorns and sometimes it looks like wheels. So it is very difficult to make out its resemblance to something else.

8. Peace: I used a sunboard to make this. It reminds me of the wings of 'dove' which depicts peace. Due to its curves and also white color, it looks very calm.

9. Gloomy: Again I burned sunboard and the burn marks depicts pain and loneliness in a person's life.

10. Danger:

11. Wounded: This is one of my resin works. Due to its color and irregular carving, it looks very painful and a little horrifying too.

12. Confusion: The different shapes going inwards in a circular manner kind of creates an illusion and makes it difficult to differentiate between them.

13. Love: Who said that love can only be seen among humans? The way these two abstract figures (resembling like palm tree leaves) are intertwined with each other also depicts love.

14. Nostalgia: These curvy circles seems like a cloud to me and take me on a trip down the memory lane where I used to see figures in clouds.

15. Adventurous: This maze gives me a feeling of adventure and daring as if exploring something new and unknown.

16. Content: The feeling of content is when you are satisfied and happy the way you are. This exploration if considered in the human context is 'turned and twisted' which might make it alienated but despite everything, it is still standing embracing its form.

17. Freedom: Like everybody is coming out of their cage.

18. Fearful: The way it has shades of burned marks but it is still glowing makes it very powerful.

19. Incomplete: There's a void that is waiting to be filled for it to be complete again.

20. Confident: Just like the knot which is holding the loose threads together, it depicts confidence to me.

REFLECTION:

Depicting feelings through materials wasn't easy so I took a reverse approach for this. I first made the structure and then associated the feeling with it because as soon as I take a material in my hand, my hands automatically start moulding them without an idea in my mind.

This activity was really exciting because as a painter I don't think there's a better way to express your emotion than though painting and sculptures.

DAY 3: DOODLING

Today was the beginning for the final outcome of this project. We were asked to draw doodles/ rough sketches for our final outcome.

The doodles that I found the most interesting were 6, 14, and 18.

REFLECTION:

Making doddles is something that comes very naturally to me. I still remember how I used to draw doodles on my school desk all the time. This is something that I always do before making anything whether I'm told or not. Even during F2F or making a digital poster I first plan out everything in the form of a doodle.

DAY 4: DRAWING

Brief: Making one full scale final drawing of the final outcome with clear marking of dimensions, details, materials, etc.

So, I decided to make my final outcome by burning sunboard to make coral reef like structures and then pouring wax over them.

REFLECTION:

To be honest, I enjoy doodling more than a drawing with proper dimensions because I don't like to plan things rather I just go with the flow. So it is very difficult for me to draw something which I am not even sure about. Hence, I apply a reverse method for this, I first make the final outcome and based on it, draw the outcome but it still doesn't have proper dimensions as I did everything randomly.

But despite everything, I tried my best to draw it as fine as possible. And I think I was somehow able to capture my abstract form with the help of my pen.
