INTRODUCTION:

This activity was a continuation of the previous Think Lab activity in which we were introduced to three thinking tools namely 'Slice and Dice', 'Crossbreeding', and 'Idea Box'. Just like the previous one we were given a pre-reading material. The tools that we learnt this time were 'Circle of Opportunity' and 'SCAMPER'. Instead of the warm up we revised what we had learnt in the previous activity(7). While briefing we were shown a presentation explaining SCAMPER.

MAIN ACTIVITY:

We were all divided into groups which were different from the last time so as to build the 'team spirit' among us. This time the members of my group were- Prisha, Srishti, Aanvi. Yet again we were to do the tasks on our own with a little help from the group members. The activity was divided into the application of two thinking tools:

  1. Circle of Opportunity - The product I chose was a pencil. I felt that this tool was more like the 'Idea Box' because in this as well we had to list the different attributes of a product but in circular order. We numbered them from 1-12 and then asked the group members to pick any two or three numbers. Some even used dices for this and then presented the final outcome.

2. SCAMPER - It is a way of manipulating creativity by looking at a thing in as many ways as possible. It stands for:

S - Substituting something or replace a part of the product

C - Combine the elements of something else in the initial product

A - Adapt; according to technology or culture or any other need of the moment

M - Modify or Magnify the idea to give an insight about what is important

P - Put to another use; alternative use of the product

E - Eliminate (minify) an existing part of the product to make it more interesting

R - Rearrange/Reverse the parts of the object

OBSERVATION:

According to me, learning and using these thinking tools as a part of activity is a unique way of broadening my creativity and problem solving skills. It has widened my horizon of design thinking and also taught me how to overcome the blockage that a designer sometimes face. Even though the tasks are quite rigorous, it is amazing how every time we all manage to come up with something which is different in some way. These once a week Think Lab sessions function as oil which is essential for the engine of our brain so that it keeps working smoothly.

LEARNING MANTRA:

Everyday is a new learning.
